Our Academics

Our focus is on designing small group instruction that is differentiated, elicits critical thinking through quality discussions in order to promote student engagement and increase student achievement in both English Language Arts (ELA) and Math.

Literacy

We are currently using a Balanced Literacy Approach to teach reading and writing. The program used is ReadyGen. ReadyGEN is an integrated and well-balanced approach to reading and writing instruction for classrooms. Students read authentic literary and informational texts. Instruction focuses on reading, writing, speaking, and listening in response to authentic texts using different strategies .ReadyGen’s overall progression of complexity of text, within and across grades, facilitates students’ learning of academic vocabulary, close reading and foundational skills, and further deepens content knowledge and comprehension.

Science

We currently use Amplify Science. This program blends hands-on investigations, literacy-rich activities, and interactive digital tools to empower students to think, read, write, and argue like real scientists and engineers.

Each unit of Amplify Science engages students in a relevant, real-world problem where they investigate scientific phenomena, engage in collaboration and discussion, and develop models or explanations in order to arrive at solutions

Writing

We are currently using Teachers College Writing Curriculum. In the Teachers College writing workshop curriculum, each unit of study provides young writers with multiple opportunities to move through the different stages of the writing process in order to take their pieces from rehearsal to publication. Using minilessons that teach writing strategies helps students move independently through the writing process while we teach responsively in small groups and individual conferences. When students are taught specific knowledge about how to write, the overall quality of their writing improves.

Social Studies

We currently use Passport to Social Studies. This program is a comprehensive instructional resource that integrates the Common Core Learning Standards (CCLS) and the New York State K-8 Social Studies Framework to support strong social studies teaching and learning.Passport to Social Studies include units of study as well as a variety of documents, trade books, and primary sources as part of the classroom package to support rigorous instruction and student inquiry.

Mathematics

At C.S. 150 we encourage students to see relationships, ask questions, and try different approaches through exploration. We believe that Problem-Based Learning and a productive struggle drives student learning and instruction. As a result, the Five Practices are a part of our daily instruction. We are currently using the enVision Math Program in which content is organized into clusters of connected topics and lessons.

Physical Education

The C.S. 150 gymnasium is the place where students can go to release their energy and have tons of fun. This year has been packed with various games and activities for our student body to learn and love!
